Kathua : A meeting of the District Road Safety Committee was held on Saturday under the Chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Kathua, Rahul Pandey here at DC office complex.
On the occasion RTO Kathua, ASP Kathua, Chief Education Officer, Executive Engineer PWD (R&B), Executive Engineer PWD (R&B) Basohli, Executive Engineer, PMGSY, representative of the BRO, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and other members were present.
Detailed discussions were held with respect to enforcement of Traffic rules, formulation of awareness activity calendar, identification of land for the trauma care centre, road safety activities, identification of black spots and road safety audit etc.
Speaking on the occasion, the DC said that road safety underlines the need for effective implementation of measures to make the roads safe for travelling, minimizing road mishaps, injuries and deaths.
He called for spreading mass awareness about the safety rules and taking corrective measures to make the roads safe for commuters. He also stressed on the concerned officers to take all required measures to decongest the City roads to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
The DC directed the XEN PWD (R&B) Kathua to improve road markings and signages to eliminate high risk stretches, black spots and improvement of junctions on all cross-roads.Executive Engineers from PWD(R&B) and PMGSY were directed to ensure regular maintenance of the roads to avoid road accidents.
They were also asked to identify the black spots and take corrective measures in accidental prone areas by fixing sign boards and installing crash barriers.
The DC while stressing on the need to educate the masses about the road safety rules, directed the RTO Kathua to liaison with heads of schools and colleges for organising special road safety awareness camps and motivating them to follow the golden rules of traffic.
The Motor Vehicle Department was directed to submit the activity calendar in this regard focusing on priority areas viz high congestion and accident prone areas.
To encourage the public regarding road safety, the DC called for rewarding and appreciating the Good Samaritans from time to time so that more people will come forward to lend help to accident victims and saving their lives by rescuing the victims during golden hour.
For strict enforcement of the traffic rules, the DC asked the MVA and traffic authorities to carry out special drives and take stern action against the violators.
The DC directed CEO Kathua MC to work out modalities for tackling the menace of stray animals which cause traffic obstruction and pose danger to commuters.
The meeting also discussed issues ranging from restoration of transport services on vital routes, especially in border and hilly areas, installation of traffic lights, fixing of potholes, display of signages of speed limit, emergency helpline numbers and further impressing upon concerned officers to submit action taken report at the earliest.
