FMPHW Veerta Sharma talks about working in Corona ward in DH Kishtwar

"I’m happy for being part of battle against COVID"

Kishtwar : During the tough times of COVID-19 pandemic, doctors and paramedics are playing a pivotal role in the fight against the deadly virus despite all odds.Veerta Sharma, a young Female Multi-Purpose Health Worker (FMPHW), hailing from village Shiv Nagar, is presently posted in COVID Care Centre at District Hospital (DH) Kishtwar. She represents the indomitable spirit which thousands of her counterparts have shown in the last over one year amid the Corona pandemic. She never feared any assignment given to her during COVID-19 pandemic and instead put her heart and soul on all fronts,’ is what her seniors said. “When I was in my teens I had dreamt of serving humanity and after I chose the medical profession, I knew I was going in the right direction. It will provide me an opportunity to serve the destitute and it did,” she said.Speaking about her daily routine, Veerta said striking a balance between professional and motherhood duty is her greatest task. “I have been in the medical field for a decade. I never kept account of how many people I served. Everything was just normal until the outbreak of covid pandemic. We did face many difficulties in the beginning but slowly grabbed the pace of handling the virus,” she said when asked about Covid duty.Her daily routine work in COVID ward is checking oxygen saturation level, pulse rate, BP and giving medication to COVID positive patients as prescribed by doctors.
During the second wave of Coronavirus, she said “I knew it was going to be tough. I am fully packed with PPE kits, gloves and face masks and after wearing these sometimes I feel nausea, suffocation and exhausted, but treating the patients is my first priority and during this pandemic, this is the best service I can offer to society.””I still remember condition of some COVID patients were very worst, likewise they can’t even able to change their clothes, can’t eat, barely walk but I never lost hope and I did my best on all fronts by providing all sorts of help they needed like medication, empathy and motivation to keep their and my own spirits high,” she maintained.”I feel so happy and privileged that I am able to treat more than 100 COVID-19 patients and also assisted one covid pregnant delivery in District Hospital, which gave me further encouragement to work with more dedication,” -She remarked.Before going to the duty, she has to sanitize herself and again while entering her home, besides taking other extra precautions so that none of her family members contract the deadly virus.”My little daughter runs straight to hug me when I come back from work, but I can’t embrace her. Before entering my home I had to sanitise myself and change clothes and confine myself to a separate room for one to two hours,” she said emotionally. “Our next task is vaccination, we have done and we are doing through integrated efforts. Motivating and counselling people to take the vaccine at the earliest,” she said and complimented the efforts of all frontline workers. “The pandemic time is really trying. We health care workers are doing our best to put every possible effort to ensure a covid virus free society. But we need cooperation of people and this cooperation is -to maintain proper hygiene, having a good diet, following SOPs, not panicking and most importantly taking Vaccine,” she appealed. She exhorted that ’We have and we will overcome this united.’
